What is the Complete News?
Former American movie producer Harvey Weinstein, known for using his Hollywood influence to lure women into private meetings, was found guilty. He was convicted of 3 of 7 charges, including rape and sexual assault against one of four women.
After ten days of deliberations of his Los Angeles sexual assault trial, jurors also discharged him from a sexual battery by restraining against a massage therapist. There were two more charges against him.
One is rape, and the other is forcible oral copulation related to two other women, including a filmmaker, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. Harvey was convicted of three charges, including rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration.
However, the Los Angeles Jury reached the verdict after deliberating for around 41 hours. It was longer than the New York jury that took 26 hours of deliberations, and he was accused of the criminal sex act and third-degree rape.
Further, his lawyer appealed against the verdict, and then the case was taken to the Los Angeles Jury.
What were the Allegations made against him?
In the week-long trial of Harvey, women were asked about the allegations they put against Harvey. They were asked to provide every detail of meetings with him from years ago and their reactions to every assault.
Currently, Harvey is accused of 11 charges, of which four are connected to an unnamed woman. These counts were dropped without any explanation. During arguments, Harvey was called Titan, who used his Hollywood influence to lure women into private meetings.
Marlene Martinez, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney, made this statement about him. However, Harvey’s lawyer kept saying that every allegation against him was fabricated. He said there is no evidence of accusations against him.
Some other witnesses’ testimonies were also included in the trial. They were experts, friends of accusers, law enforcement and former aids to Harvey.
How Women (Victims) reacted to Harvey Weinstein being found Guilty
Every charge made on Harvey was connected to one of four women, a model and actress identified as Jane Doe. It was being said that he assaulted her in a Beverly Hills hotel room in February 2013.
She was the first woman to testify in his sexual assault trial. Jane Doe made a statement that Harvey did very wrong to her. He destroyed a part of her that night in 2013, and she’ll never get that back.
During the trial, Harvey’s lawyer put me through hell. She’s hoping that Harvey never sees the outside of a prison in a lifetime. When Harvey was found guilty, Jane said she was happy that Harvey was convicted on some charges.
Jane added that she believed that the reason behind Harvey being found guilty was that he deserved punishment for his crimes. Now, he is no longer to lure and sexually assault other women.
Siebel Newsom also stated that Harvey will never be able to rape a woman again as now he is going to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
According to her, the entire trial was a stark reminder as Harvey’s lawyer kept using words like misogyny, sexism and bullying tactics to intimidate her. She claimed it reminded us that we as a society have a lot of work to do.
Gov. Newsom, Siebel’s husband, also reacted to Harvey being found guilty. He said he is proud of his wife and every brave woman who came outside to share their truth. Their courage and strength are going to inspire a lot of others who suffered the same.
As survivors, we need to keep fighting for the truth, he added.
